Fandango recently released survey results showing that majority of the moviegoers who will watch "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" may be more excited to see a glimpse of Wonder Woman in action. Before everyone finally gets that chance to see Gal Gadot in action, however, let us find out just who exactly this amazing Amazonian warrior is.
Wonder Woman first appeared in 1941 and there are actually two versions of her origins. While we will discuss both, the focus will be more on the "newer" version, which DC opted to use for the films.
Paradise Island
Paradise Island is home to the immortal amazon women who actually have a tragic past. All the Amazon Women who live in Paradise Island are actually the women who were murdered by men and their souls-except for one- have been called forth by the goddesses in 1200 BC to inhabit the island. This is how the Amazons were created.
Hippolyta, queen of Paradise Island and mother to Diana, is actually the reincarnation of first woman to die in the hands of a man- and she was pregnant when she died.
Original Version
The first version of Diana's origins is more like a biblical allusion to the creation story in that she was fashioned out of clay which the Greek Goddesses had given life to. Remember the one soul who was not called when Paradise Island was created? That was the unborn child. What happened was that the goddesses instructed Hippolyta to fashion a child out of clay and, after she was done with clay baby, the goddesses finally called that one remaining soul and bonded it to the clay. That was how Diana was born and that is why she is Hippolyta's daughter.
The six goddesses of the pantheon involved in the creation of Paradise Island and the Amazons were Athena, Aphrodite, Artemis, Demeter, Hermes, and Hestia, and they all gave Diana gifts when she was born. Athena, of course, gave wisdom and courage, Aprhrodite gave beauty and a loving heart, Artemis gave her a hunter's eyes and a bond with animals, Demeter granted great strength, Hermes gave speed and flight, and Hestia granted sisterhood with fire.
To quell Superman and Batman's curiosity in the trailer of their joint film: Wonder Woman is not with either of them because she is Wonder Woman and she can take care of her own battles.
