People who've played any of Bethesda's Fallout games know that the series has some of the most diverse cast of characters as far as adventure games are concerned.
Over the years, players have been introduced to the dwellers of various Vaults spread throughout the Wasteland as well as to the members of rival factions fighting for control over the game's post-apocalyptic world.
While humans are still pretty much the dominant race in Fallout, one of its most famous characters is arguably the trusty animal companion Dogmeat.
One fan loved this German shepherd so much that he has developed a mod for Fallout 4 that allows players to wander the world as Dogmeat or any other canine for that matter.
The "Be The Dog - Playable Dogs" mod adds a new dimension to the game as other non-playable characters (NPCs) tend to talk to, befriend, or even shoot at you, ending in some hilarious moments. However, it also comes with limitations for players.
Unlike human playable characters that can use various weapons, dog characters can only attack using basic or powerful bites. This can be quite effective against enemies that have guns.
Players can also equip their four-legged personas with dog gear as long as it isn't marked as unavailable. They can also recruit Dogmeat as their companion.
The mod lets dog characters use the standard issue Pip-Boy to help navigate them through the Wasteland, though this can be quite annoying since the device doesn't show up in first person mode. Players would have to either switch back to their human form for a while before the end of the intro sequence or use a game save outside of Vault 111 to prevent it from crashing.
Fallout 4 may only be four months old, but it has already inspired a number of fanmade mods including one for a Dragon Ball Z scouter gear and one to let gamers play as the main character of the popular web comic series "One Punch Man."
Bethesda also has a new three-part downloadable content for the game set to be released in the next few months. The first of these is "Automatron", which gives players the opportunity to build their own customizable robot companions. Fallout 4 season pass holders can download this DLCs starting Tuesday, March 22.
