Like Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) before her, it looks like one of the biggest breakout stars from Star Wars: The Force Awakens was asked by someone via the Internet to accompany him as a date to a formal. Even though Daisy Ridley couldn't make it, she managed to send her online suitor a heartfelt rejection on Instagram — with a Star Wars joke thrown in for good measure.
Created by Kevin Carlock, a student at Davidson College in North Carolina, the video "Daisy Ridley Formal Invitation" features the proposer flanked by a motley crew of backup dancers, who we're also assuming are his friends. While the YouTube rap vid starts out seeming like an advertisement for Davidson's athletics department — which makes sense, considering the formal Carlock invited Ridley to is the college's Athlete's Spring Formal — it then segues into some sincere fandom, with a few clever references to The Force Awakens and the Star Wars movies that preceded it:
"So long story short, I think you'd love it here. / Kylo Ren's not invited, you've got nothing to fear. / Daisy, you're cooler than Leia and Padme before her. / I'd give you more than quarter portions for your parts from star destroyers."
The infectiously-catchy invite was posted on Feb. 23, but unfortunately, Ridley didn't see it until almost a month later. As of now, the clip has received over 42,000 views.
Sadly, Ridley had to decline Carlock's invitation — she has a prior engagement, an "intense staring competition with Luke Skywalker, somewhere in the middle of the galaxy" (there's also a good chance that she missed the formal entirely).
Ridley also captioned the 'gram to let her fan know her written message was all in good taste: "@kevincarlock your video made my day! Can't believe I only just saw it! Thank you!!!"
An ecstatic and understanding Carlock replied to the letdown, thanking the actress for her reply. "Father-daughter staring contests are epic, so I understand," he said. He then signed off with "may the formal be with you" and wished her luck with Episode VIII.
I guess we better let Rey get on to it, then — after all, she has a Force to harness and an entire galaxy far, far away to rescue.
