Instagram released a new video app targeting fans of time-lapse photography.
The mobile photo and video sharing company announced its first stand-alone app in July 2014 with the release of Bolt, a Snapchat-like app enabling users to send a photo or video message that self-destructs after it has been viewed. On Tuesday, August 26, Instagram unveiled another stand-alone app: Hyperlapse.
Hyperlapse makes it incredibly easy to create impressive time-lapse videos on an iPhone. The secret behind the app is its stabilization technology. The company explains, “Traditionally, time lapse videos depend on holding your phone or camera still while you film. Hyperlapse from Instagram features built-in stabilization technology that lets you create moving, handheld time lapses that result in a cinematic look, quality and feel—a feat that has previously only been possible with expensive equipment.”

As with Instagram’s flagship product, simplicity is central to Hyperlapse’s design. The app is straightforward, making it extremely easy to shoot a video, select its playback speed, then share the creation on Instagram or Facebook. The video is also saved to the camera roll.
Although Instagram hopes to eventually bring the free app to the Android platform, Hyperlapse is currently only available for iOS devices.
