'The Walking Dead' Episode Recap: 'The Same Boat' Was A Terrifying Hour For Carol And Maggie

Episode 13 of AMC's "The Walking Dead" sees two of the stronger female members of Rick's team facing a lot of danger, not only from the Saviors and Walkers, but also internally as they are forced to face some terrifying truths. Aptly titled "The Same Boat," this episode thrusts Carol and Maggie into a sticky situation as they attempt to escape after being captured by Negan's followers.

The episode opens where the cliffhanger for "Not Tomorrow Yet" left off, but seen through a different lens - literally. Rick is seen through Paula's binoculars and viewers find that she has both Carol and Maggie in custody, but the point-of-view shifts again, this time to the captives' limited vision, and this is exactly how the entire episode goes.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead!

No, the episode is not filmed in first-person through the eyes of either Carol or Maggie, but it instills upon the viewer that each survivor in the series, especially the ones who belong to Rick's team, has a limited vision of the truth, whether they accept it or not. Episode 13 forces both Carol and Maggie to look in a different perspective and face the terrifying truth of what they have become.

"Sweetie, we are all Negan," says Molly, one of their captors.

Donnie, who Carol shot prior to getting captured, threatened Carol's life, but Paula stopped him. He smacks Paula, but the women unintentionally work together to subdue him. Carol also seems afraid the whole time, to the point that Paula calls her pathetic.

While the two women are kept in a slaughterhouse, they are faced with Savior versions of themselves who do not hesitate to put things into perspective. Carol faces Paula, who has also undergone the same transformation as her from a timid office worker to a killing machine. While Maggie faces Chelle who was also in a relationship and got pregnant - though she lost her baby.

"You're not the good guys. You should know that," Chelle tells Maggie during their interrogation.

It seems Chelle has a point, because after Carol breaks free from her bonds using the rosary she sharpened and finds Maggie to quietly escape, Maggie herself insists that they have to kill everyone.

"We can't leave them alive. We have to finish this," Maggie says.

Carol seems to be coming to a realization and is afraid that Maggie is slowly turning into her- or a version of her that she had to become to survive.

Donnie dies from the gunshot wound Carol dealt and begins to turn into a zombie. While he isn't fully there yet, Maggie tethers him to a pipe, which allows walker Donnie to attack his fellow Savior, Molly when she entered the room. After getting attacked, Molly is bludgeoned to death courtesy of Maggie.

Carol and Maggie make a run for it until they reach the area where walkers are impaled and waiting to grab the nearest living body.

Paula finds her two dead Savior pals draws her gun and runs after them. Apparently, Paula still has neither learned her lesson about conserving bullets nor aiming properly, because she uses up her bullets without any damage dealt to the two Alexandrians.

Maggie eggs on Carol to kill Paula, but a walker attacks, and distracting her. Chelle arrives and tries to slash her belly, but was killed by Carol. Paula, who was injured and on the ground, finally asks what Carol was so afraid of when she is capable of doing the things she did.

"I was afraid of this," Carol answers. Whether she means having to kill Paula, having to kill again or watching Maggie slowly turning into someone who is bent on killing, is up to your interpretation. Carol shoves Paula to an impaled walker when the latter tries to attack and they set a trap for the other Survivors who just radioed in that they have arrived.

After watching the Savior burn, the two then race outside to find Rick and the others. Rick kills Primo point-blank in front of them, but not before Primo tells them that he is Negan.

Perhaps Carol's limited vision clears up the moment she walked out of the compound because when Daryl asked if she's okay, she says no. But who would blame Carol when, after all those non-walker related deaths, you slowly begin to realize that, perhaps, they have become Negans by a different name.

Perhaps this is why there is a possibility that a major character death may be in Rick's hands instead of Negan's.
