AMC's "Preacher" is heading to Austin for a world premiere at SXSW and it's making its presence known with an attention-grabbing installation of an upside-down church.
A part of the marketing campaign for the series, the installation may be viewed at the corner of Red River and Fourth streets until Tuesday, a day after the pilot episode for "Preacher" was screened at the event. The screening will be followed by a 30-minute Q&A with the series' creators and stars.
Based off the acclaimed Vertigo comic series by Steve Dillon and Garth Ennis, "Preacher" tells the story of a West Texas preacher called Jesse Custer, who has a mysterious entity living inside him that leads him to develop a highly unusual power. Custer is joined by Tulip, his ex-girlfriend; Cassidy, an Irish vagabond (also a vampire!); and various characters from Heaven, Hell and in between, fused in a dark, comedic, supernatural drama.
Ahead of SXSW, AMC released character posters for "Preacher," providing a first look at the stars who will be playing Custer, Tulip and Cassidy: Dominic Cooper, Ruth Negga and Joseph Gilgun. These first images also helped set up what kind of characters Custer, Tulip and Cassidy will be.
For example, with him lighting a cigarette while sitting on a church pew, Custer is established as not your run-of-the-mill preacher. Cassidy in a bar also hints at the vampire's unhealthy diet of alcohol and drugs.
Set to debut in May, "Preacher" lists Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen as executive producers and Sam Catlin as showrunner. The pilot to be screened at SXSW was directed by Goldberg and Rogen and was written by Catlin. Joining Cooper, Negga and Gilgun for the episode are Lucy Griffiths, Tom Brooke, Anatol Yusef, Derek Wilson, Ian Colletti and W. Earl Brown.
