Spider-Man is set to debut in "Marvel's Captain America: Civil War," and along with the webslinger's reboot is one planned spin-off project revolving around Venom.
Sony was previously planning several spin-off movies for "Spider-Man," but after "Amazing Spider-Man 2," Sony agreed to an alliance with Marvel to share the character. The agreement placed the planned spin-offs on hold, but according to an exclusive report by The Hollywood Reporter, the "Venom" movie has been revived.
Sony was said to have tapped "Edge of Tomorrow's" Dante Harper to write the script for "Venom," with Spider-Man stewards Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach set to produce and oversee the movie.
The "Venom" movie is being seen as a franchise that would be apart from and unrelated to the upcoming "Spider-Man" reboot by Sony, which will be starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker.
In addition to the "Venom" movie being a completely standalone one, it is said that it will be the first of a franchise.
Venom is one of the most iconic villains in the Marvel Universe and one of the mainstays in the "Spider-Man" series since he was introduced in 1988. Venom is the manifestation of an alien symbiote, which provides extraordinary powers to humans that it attaches to as its host.
The first Venom was Eddie Brock, one of Parker's rivals as a Daily Bugle reporter. The symbiote has also been attached to Mac Gargan, who was previously The Scorpion.
Venom has since become an anti-hero, with the symbiote currently partnered up with Flash Thompson, a government agent that is now one of Parker's close friends after previously bullying him.
Venom made his first screen appearance in "Spider-Man 3," where Parker was played by Tobey Maguire and Brock was played by Topher Grace.
Details regarding the plot for the planned "Venom" movie have not yet been revealed, as well as the person to whom the symbiote will be attached to. The movie being unrelated to the "Spider-Man" franchise could be seen as unthinkable at first, but developing "Venom" without any relation to "Spider-Man" would allow Arad and Tolmach free reign with the character without having to deal with the shared rights that Sony has with Marvel over Spider-Man.
