For film fans, the first few months of every new year can be torture. That bleak period between the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards, which almost feels like having a hangover before the party has even begun, is made even worse by January and February's designation as "dump months," when lackluster blockbusters and box office stinkers go to wallow and die rather than be released.
Luckily, HBO Now is adding some top-notch fare to its lineup that'll fill the void until the Oscars, and dump month doldrums are (for the latter, thankfully) behind us.
While the entire list of March's theatrical additions to HBO's streaming service are all worthy gems, it seems like Now is really going the zany comedy route. Take Kung Pow: Enter the Fist, the cult kung fu film send-up starring Steve Oedekerk (which may or may not be getting a sequel), or 2001's Super Troopers (which is most definitely getting a sequel). Even though it was panned by critics, Melissa McCarthy's Tammy might be worth it for the Melissa McCarthy acolyte who can't wait until her turn in Ghostbusters later this year, and no one can say no to the Nathan Lane/Robin Williams smash The Birdcage, which is celebrating the 20th anniversary since its release this year.
For those who tend to prefer some more serious fare, HBO has got your back: two contenders for the 2016 Oscar for Best Documentary (Short Subject) will be available to view via the service: A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness and Body Team 12.
