Destiny 2 is set to roll out in 2017, and to keep the good news flowing, Destiny is slated to get a "large expansion" sometime this year
Bungie finally announced the news via its weekly update, confirming that the full sequel and expansion are indeed coming.
"Prior to the holiday break we mentioned a second, larger update slated for Spring. That content release will feature a significant Light increase, a bunch of new gear to earn and equip, and new challenges for PvE players seeking some more fun experiences and replayability. Beyond that, the team is focused on delivering a large expansion later this year, and a full Destiny sequel in 2017," Bungie says.
It's also worth mentioning that prior to this confirmation, the only evidence of these plans was the investor's earnings report of Activision.
"Activision Publishing, along with its partners at Bungie, expects to bring a large new expansion to Destiny in 2016 and to release a full game sequel in 2017," the report reads.
As of right now, details of what Bungie has in store are scarce and no one really knows what this large expansion will exactly bring to the table. Needless to say, the same goes for the Destiny follow-up.
At any rate, a Destiny 2 would mean that the developers are going to deliver some pretty sweet content similar to the vanilla release. In the event that they ship out something that's below that level of quality, it's a safe bet to assume that virtually every player will get a little riled up.
Meanwhile, there's more or less a possibility that the expansion will be on par with The Taken King despite the few information at present. That's because the gaming company did say it is going to be a large one.
If it turns out to be a DLC along the lines of Dark Below or House of Wolves, then fans won't exactly be happy with it, as the expansion wouldn't have complied with the implied magnitude in that case. Still, many will welcome any upcoming additional content with open arms nevertheless.
The spring update coupled with the expansion later this year is a clear indication that the add-ons coming to Destiny will be packing some substantial content, though.
On a related note, many players were disappointed at the Crimson Days event for Valentine's Day, so they could be a bit critical about any content that makes its way to the game.
According to Bungie, it's not ready to divulge the juicy details yet, including more in-depth info and solid release dates.
"As soon as we're ready, we'll share the details with you in all the usual places. In the meantime, we'll keep the conversation rolling with the team on the support front," the company says.
To boil things down, it's difficult to make some grounded guesswork about specific release dates without any information regarding the size and quality of these projects. Well, at least a big update is on track for spring.
Hopefully, Destiny 2 and the large expansion will be launched during the early quarters of their respective years.
