This genius Simpsons fan has brought the popular characters from Springfield right into our computers.
Web developer Chris Pattle was able to successfully turn The Simpsons characters into computer code, recreating their cel animation look using CSS.
Wanting to prove that coders can replace graphics with CSS, Pattle thought that recreating cartoon characters seemed like the most feasible example to tackle. Similarly to how artists sketch their cartoons using shapes, he started by taking each Simpsons character's face and breaking it up into different shapes — based on those he knew he could create with CSS — that he could later put back together.
He then hand-composed the code, which features hundreds of lines that allow every small detail of these Simpsons characters to come to life on our computers.
Of course, creating some characteristics were harder to code then others, such as the complex and angular shape of Bart's hair, Ned Flanders' half a donut-shaped mustache, and Mr Burns' alien-like skull.
So far Pattle has turned the following Simpsons characters into computer code: Homer, Bart, Marge, Lisa, Maggie, Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders, Krusty the Clown, Itchy, Smithers, Comic Book Guy, Ralph Wiggum and Apu.
The U.K.-based developer has also been able to code a green and colorless version of Bart Simpson.
Pattle revealed on his blog that he aims to add more characters to the list, as well as tweak the existing ones to reduce the number of elements needed to create them.
Pattle put his project, titled Simpsons in CSS, on Github, where The Simpsons fans can view the source code and download the characters.
