In keeping with its "worst heroes ever" tagline, Suicide Squad just got a new trailer on Instagram highlighting the ragtag group chosen by Amanda Waller for a special dangerous mission.
Of course, Waller chose the group because its members are both insane and expendable, and she probably doesn't expect that any of them will return from the mission alive.
The trailer teases that the team will go "somewhere very bad to do something that gets you killed." Of course, that's all followed up with laughter by the Joker, because this isn't just any group of antiheroes. These are villains well-known to the DC Comics universe. Comic book fans know that they have all survived much worse.
This promo isn't quite as cool as the previous trailer that featured Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," but it shows off a lot of action shots from the movie. However, there's still the mystery of what the team will go up against, and it's seeming less and less likely that it's the Joker or Enchantress, although many fans believe that they're the bad guys in the movie.
As in previous clips, Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) stands out front and center in this promo, lending credence to rumors that she's the true star of the movie. Rumors have gone so far as to say that Suicide Squad will reveal her origin story, especially after photos leaked online that showed the Ace Chemicals logo. Of course, that could reference the Joker's origin, but most fans are more familiar with his story than Harley's, so why would Warner Bros. show that backstory again?
Of course, producers have made a big deal about Jared Leto's portrayal of the Joker in the movie, but comic book fans remain skeptical, particularly because this version of the character looks so different from previous incarnations. However, director David Ayer believes that it's time for a more modern take on the character.
"It's a scary character to tackle," said Ayer to Comic Book Resources. "This iteration of him, people will realize there really is a continuity of history — there is a lot of respect for what the Joker represents, who he is as a character. He is the best known villain in fiction, so there's an incredible responsibility there to also be faithful to what he is but at the same time push him into this next world, next time, next phase."
Suicide Squad hits theaters on Aug. 5.
