Google has announced that it's shutting down its My Tracks services. The GPS tracking app will no longer be available from April 30.
My Tracks monitors the physical activity of users with the help of the phone's GPS. The app has not received a major update in quite some time and it is not surprising that Google is shutting it down.
"My Tracks will no longer be available. We apologize for the inconvenience this might cause My Tracks users. We've made the tough decision to invest our efforts into other, more wide-reaching, mapping projects. Below are some resources to help you manage or export your data and find other apps to continue tracking your activities," said Google.
For users who are still relying on My Tracks and would want to have their data in the app, Google is giving the option of exporting the data to an external drive or to Google Drive.
How To Export My Tracks Data To Google Drive
Users will have to open the My Tracks app on their device and then to Touch More and tap on Settings. Users will then have to select Sync to Google Drive and the device will start exporting the data.
After exporting is complete, users will be able to find their data in the "My Tracks" folder in Google Drive. The exported files will be in the KML/KMZ format.
How To Export My Tracks Data To External Drive
After opening the My Tracks app, users will have to go to the main menu and then to Touch More and tap on Export all.
Users will have the option to select a file format from KML, GPX, CSV or TCX to which they want to export their My Tracks data. After exporting the files, users will be able to find their data in /My Tracks folder.
After My Tracks services are shut down, customers may want to use alternate apps depending on what they used most on My Tracks. Google suggests some alternatives:
Google Fit - A fitness tracking app that tracks the user's activity such as walking, running or cycling throughout the day.
Strava - A cycling and running app that records a users' activities such as speed, distance covered, pace and other essential stats.
Map My Run - This is a GPS running, jogging, walking, workout tracking and calorie counter.
GPX Viewer - The app loads tracks, waypoints and routes from various file types and then draws them on different map types such as Mapbox, Google Maps and more. GPX Viewer also provides detailed information regarding each track, waypoint and route.
