Microsoft Announces More Backward-Compatible Games For Xbox One, Including 'The Witcher 2'

Microsoft just announced even more games to its Xbox One backward-compatibility list, including The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings and SoulCalibur.

This list isn't as long as previous lists of Xbox 360 games now available for play on the Xbox One, but that's because Microsoft is now releasing games as soon as they're ready for backward compatibility. In the future, expect these announcements to come more often, with a title or two listed at a time.

"In addition to adding a few new titles to the backward-compatibility list, we're also going to start releasing titles as they become available rather than a set monthly launch date," writes Xbox's Major Nelson on his blog. "What this means for you is that you won't have to wait to find out the latest titles; we'll release whatever is available, when they're available, once each title has received the engineering and publisher stamp of approval."

Here are the 10 Xbox 360 games recently added to the list of games now playable on the Xbox One:

Aegis Wing

Age of Booty

Counter-Strike: GO

Jeremy McGrath's Offroad

Sam & Max Save the World

Skullgirls

Small Arms

SoulCalibur

Space Giraffe

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

A full list of all backward-compatible games is available on the Xbox website.

Microsoft also stated that, in certain regions, The Witcher 2: Assassins of King is available as a free download on Xbox Live as of today through Feb. 5. That game picks up shortly after the events of the first The Witcher title. Geralt is now King Foltest's bodyguard, with the king now embroiled in a war between the troops of the Baroness Mary Louisa La Valette, his former mistress.

"Players assume the identity of Geralt of Rivia, a professional monster slayer, or witcher, as he becomes entangled within the political turmoil that has engulfed Temeria while hunting down a treacherous assassin," writes the Xbox team on its blog. "Featuring an intense and emotionally charged, nonlinear story and using your skills with the sword and magical abilities, experience the complex and expansive adventure that leads up to the events of 2015's award winning The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt."
