Kylo Ren's crossguard lightsaber design set Star Wars fans ablaze when it first debuted in the teaser trailer for The Force Awakens. Now, the design is making its way to another Star Wars property: the Disney XD show Star Wars Rebels.
In a new trailer for the return of season two, which occurs on Jan. 20, we see Ezra wielding a green lightsaber with the same crossguard design of Kylo Ren's now-iconic weapon. Unlike Ren's saber, however, Ezra's seems perfectly stable.
Considering the entire point of the crossguard shape is supposedly to serve as exhaust ports for the unstable main lightsaber beam, the fact that the saber Ezra finds has both a crossguard and a perfectly stable beam is a little ... odd. Ren's saber was supposedly made by the character himself and modeled off an "ancient design," so it's perfectly possible other lightsabers of the style existed in the period between the prequels and A New Hope.
Outside of the lightsaber's appearance, the new trailer has plenty of teases for fans to get excited. Amid all of the lightsaber battles, stormtroopers, spaceships and explosions in the trailer, it looks like Ezra will learn the ways of the Force not only from Master Yoda, but also from a mysterious hooded figure who asks to be called "Old Master." Who is this man? We aren't 100 percent sure yet, but very distinctive facial tattoos can be seen under his hood. Could it be Darth Maul?
Stranger things have definitely happened. The trailer also teases a climactic showdown between Ahsoka and Darth Vader, her onetime master. There is a ton going on in the three-minute video, so you'll want to watch it all for yourself below. Star Wars Rebels returns on Jan. 20.
