Pokkén Tournament, a Pokémon fighting game from the creators of Tekken, finally has a release date, and it's a lot closer than you might think.
Nintendo announced today via the official Pokémon Twitter account that Pokkén Tournament will arrive on March 18 for the Wii U in all regions. The game is already available in Japanese arcades, but will be coming to Wii U at the same time worldwide.
With a March 18 release date, that puts it at just over two months away from being in gamer's hands. New details about the game have been released all week, including new character announcements and modes. Braixen, Mewtwo and Garchomp will all joining the battle when the game releases in March, bringing the total number of confirmed fighters in the game to 15. Those who purchase first editions of the game will receive a Shadow Mewtwo Amiibo card that, when used, instantly unlocks Shadow Mewtwo in the game.
The game will include a single battle mode, local battle and online play in the form of both ranked and "friendly" matches. While playing local battle, the game will run at 30 frames-per-second, but players can connect two Wii U's with a LAN cable to maintain a 60 fps experience, according to Pokémon fan-site Serebii.net.
All in all, 2016 is looking to be a big year for Pokémon. Nintendo is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Pokémon Red and Blue by re-releasing the games (plus Pokémon Yellow) on the Nintendo 3DS eshop, as well as selling new Pokémon Red- and Blue-themed 3DS bundles that come with the classic game's preinstalled.
