iPhone 6 with 4.7-inch screen will rely on 2100 mAh battery: Report

Apple has consistently come under fire for the paltry battery life that iPhones have. All that may change though if it's true that the 4.7-inch variant of the iPhone 6 will be fitted with a 2,100 mAh battery.

Earlier in the week, ESM-China news chief analyst Sung Chang Xu claimed that the new iPhone will be sporting 2,100 mAh batteries, a dramatic bump from the 1,560 mAh batteries that the iPhone 5s is using. There's no word on the kind of battery that the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 will be sporting but previous reports have put it at 2,500 mAh. While both types of batteries put the iPhone 6 behind their current Samsung counterparts (the Galaxy S5 and the Note 3), it is still possible for Apple to come out on top thanks to better software control over the iOS 8.

Photos of a 1,810 mAh battery for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 were leaked last month but Sung said the battery was simply for testing purposes. Since the new iPhone hasn't been officially introduced, specifications are not final although supply chain sources always have a wealth of information to share.

Then again, if the 1,810 mAh battery was to be part of the final configuration for the 4.7-inch variant, it would already be an automatic upgrade compared to what the 5s has at the moment. There must have been a collective sigh of relief for iPhone enthusiasts when those photos got out. But why stop there? Battery life has always been a concern for smartphone users so rumors that a better one is going to be used can only mean good news.

How will Apple work around using a 2,100 mAh battery for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6? Reports have speculated that it may be possible if smaller components are used since this would free up valuable internal space. There's already more room inside the 4.7-inch variant because it uses a bigger display but it will still be up to Apple how it configures the iPhone 6's insides.

It shouldn't be too long now before Apple puts all speculations to rest though. The iPhone 6 will be unveiled on Sept. 9, with the 4.7-inch variant launching shortly afterwards. As for the 5.5-inch iPhone 6, it is expected to ship either at the end of the year or early next year.
