Just Cause 3 is a single-player-only experience in which players can do all kinds of over-the-top stunts and cause all kinds of massive explosions.
Or at least it was until modders got ahold of it. The team behind the popular multiplayer mod for Just Cause 2 on PC is at it again, this time bringing Avalanche's latest open-world adventure into the realm of online multiplayer. Though it's still early, a trailer for the mod shows players racing across the South American countryside in supercars and zipping over waves in speed boats.
The Just Cause 2 mod was officially embraced by Avalanche and Just Cause publisher Square Enix, letting players download the mod directly from Steam. It's unclear if the Just Cause 3 mod will enjoy similar treatment, but it seems like a no-brainer.
Judging from the user reviews for the Just Cause 2 mod, fans certainly seem to love playing the game online. The mod features more than 10,000 user reviews on its Steam Store page, holding a rating of "Very Positive."
Given the huge success of the Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod, it's strange that Just Cause 3 didn't ship with some kind of multiplayer component built in. From the outset, the developers stated the game would be single-player only, though perhaps multiplayer was considered during the game's early stages.
Then again, hey, that's what mods are for. They are for expanding upon existing ideas and taking games to new heights that not even the developers could have dreamed possible. That's exactly what this Just Cause 3 mod is looking to do, and fans are no doubt waiting anxiously for it. No word yet on when the mod will be available, but you can go ahead and snag a copy of Just Cause 3 as part of Steam's Winter sale for $47.99.
