Bungie is no stranger to handing out gifts. It seems like the studio always has something up its sleeve every time the holidays come around, and this year is no different. Destiny players are in for a treat — but what could it be?
Last year, Bungie offered players a few high-level Engrams — but that was back when Legendary Engrams were not only harder to come by, but had a chance to downgrade themselves upon decryption. Back in the early days of Destiny, a Legendary Engram was a big deal ... but times are different now. Should players expect an Exotic Engram? Maybe a few pieces of silver to spend on Christmas-themed emotes? Maybe something that'll give players an edge when the Iron Banner returns?
Sadly, no: while all of those gifts sound great, Bungie is going with a "less-is-more" approach for the 2015 holiday season. When players sign back in following New Year's, they can expect to find 15 Strange Coins and 15 Motes of Light waiting for them at the Tower.
As Bungie describes it:
"Think of it as a gift card you can use in the Tower, where the stores are always open and there is a never a line. Buy something nice from Xûr with those Coins, but don't spend all your Motes to upgrade one item."
To be honest, it's a bit disappointing: while it technically means that players will have a better chance of getting exactly what they want, any excitement over decrypting a new Engram is lost. Even so, it's nice that Bungie is giving fans a gift at all — even if it's not the flashiest toy on the shelf.
There is one silver lining: anyone who signs in and makes it to the Tower between Jan. 7 and Jan. 10 will have an exclusive emblem waiting for them. Bungie hasn't gone into details on what to expect quite yet, but the game's past exclusives have all looked great — expect another winner come January.
Don't forget: the Iron Banner is returning to Destiny on Dec. 29. Go get 'em, guardians.
