20th Century Fox released the first official trailer for "Independence Day: Resurgence" on Sunday and it seems we are all in for a wilder ride than its 1996 original. Just when we thought the recovered alien technology and a worldwide defense program would suffice to protect the Earth, the aliens come back with a vengeance and with better technology.
"Independence Day: Resurgence" takes place 20 years after the first movie where world nations have collaborated on a defense program to fight against alien threat. However, it seems preparations were insufficient because the aliens' technology has advanced while the people of Earth have only used and improved upon recovered alien technology from 1996.
"I spent 20 years trying to get us ready for this. We used their technology to strengthen our planet... but it won't be enough," Jeff Goldblum's David Levinson says, and the mood becomes even more ominous when Bill Pullman's former President Thomas J. Whitmore reveals that he sees the aliens in his dreams and that they are definitely coming back.
"Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction," the official plot says.
"We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight!" President Whitmore declared 19 years ago to the handful of United States troops and volunteers on a mission to rid the earth of the aliens which threatened to take over the world and the message resonates as a voice-over to the montage of danger and carnage brought about by the return of the aliens.
"Today, we celebrate our –" the trailer perfectly cuts Whitmore's speech before he gets to declare Independence Day. Watch the full trailer below.
