Sandwiched in between the Captain America: Civil War trailer from last week and the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens later this month, Warner Bros. decided to remind everyone that 2016 will be all about the DC Universe with the debut of a new Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer last night.
While previous trailers for the film have focused on setting an oppressively dark mood and establishing the basic conflict between the two heroes, this footage is aimed at showing off some ol’ fashion spectacle.
There are super powers on display, punches being thrown, Bat-gadgets galore and the reveal of the film’s physical villain: Doomsday.
He only makes a brief appearance towards the end, but the hulking presence of the creature best known for killing Superman in the comics should come as a welcome sight for fans fearing that the main foe of the film would be yet another Lex Luthor real estate scheme. No, instead this Luthor is a rich, millennial Woody Allen that chews the scenery and harvests Kryptonian DNA for his own gains.
Also some good news: it looks like Wonder Woman is going to be more than just an easter egg, as she’s shown saving Batman’s hide from Doomsday’s heat vision.
Still, among all of the CGI destruction and the comic book eye candy, it’s the scene between Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne and Henry Cavill’s Clark Kent that is the standout moment from the trailer. It encapsulates 75 tense years of comic book history between these two characters in just a few seconds.
