Yahoo Movies has scored an exclusive look at the new trailer (embedded below) for the upcoming adventure epic, "The Maze Runner." The best-selling book geared towards young adults has become a sensation and looks to capitalize on the tween market in the same way that "The Hunger Games" and "Twilight" have in the past.
"The Maze Runner" follows the story of a teenage boy who is exiled to "The Glade," a place populated with other male teenagers. The Glade consists of an expansive green space surrounded by a massive and seemingly inescapable maze. As compared with some other trailers with similar themes, "The Maze Runner" goes for the grit and macabre with its predominately gray exterior and ominous looking grounds.
At first it sounds like a modern take on the literary classic "Lord of the Flies," but it is clearly an even darker and more sinister take on the story. On the heels of films like "Divergent," "The Maze Runner" looks to take a piece of the lucrative box office pie in one of the movies' most important demographics. The film stars "Teen Wolf" actor Dylan O'Brien in the lead with director Wes Ball making his feature directorial debut.
The story follows Thomas, a boy whose memory has been wiped before being dropped in the community. The visual look of the film in the trailer is most definitely eye catching with a grim overtone that adds gravitas to the drama. It is hard not to see shades of "The Hunger Games" and TV shows like "Lost" in this new film, but the massive labyrinth at the center of the film definitely piques the curiosity.
"The Maze Runner" is due in theaters on September 19.
