Earlier in the year, HTC announced that it will be releasing the Vive VR in limited quantities in late 2015 before a full release in early 2016.
Today, however, the company said that the headset is being delayed until next year. The news was announced through a blog post.
"In an effort to clear up speculation and misinformation surrounding the launch of HTC Vive this month we are excited to give the community an update on the status of HTC Vive," said the company in the blog post.
"We will be starting the new year by making an additional 7,000 units available to developers, followed by commercial availability in April 2016. We are incredibly excited about the future and look forward to sharing more information as we move forward towards launch."
While the news is a bit of a bummer, it isn't totally surprising. The timeline that HTC has had for the release of the headset has always been ambitious, even despite the fact that HTC is only working on the hardware side of the headset, with Valve working on the software. While the Oculus Rift has been in the works for a number of years now, the HTC Vive was only announced in March.
It's not yet known what the cause of the delay is and whether HTC and Valve are still working on the hardware, or if there is a lack of games and content for users to enjoy at launch that is causing the setback.
The delay will put the release of the headset slightly behind the Oculus Rift, which currently has a launch date of early 2016. It will be interesting to see what the virtual reality market turns into, even though the market is still very young and the technology has a long way to go before it becomes mainstream.
