Nexus devices are set to benefit from an update in the coming week: new emojis, fonts and keyboard.
The information comes straight from the horse's mouth, that is, Hiroshi Lockheimer, Android's SVP, who revealed via a post on Twitter on Thursday, Dec. 3, that stock Android Nexus devices would benefit from the update. His post showed off a crab, a unicorn and a lion's head.
Previously, Lockheimer had divulged that new emojis were set to arrive, and true to his promise they are set to be pushed out soon. Lockheimer also responded to a query what Unicode version this would be and if the update was to the default Google keyboard. He revealed that this would be a complete system upgrade since the change required new fonts, new keyboards and a new code.
The Android head let on that the new designs are a part of the Unicode 8.0 standard. Apple has already added this standard in its iOS 9.1.
While Nexus devices will get updated next week, OEMs will be planning out their own rollout schedules.
The Android head did not spill the beans on any other impending changes as he did not want to ruin the surprises in store for users. This hints that Android has some more interesting features in the pipeline which are headed to users' way.
If you own a stock Android Nexus device you will be able to take advantage of the new emoji options as early as next week. The new fonts and keyboard, as well as the surprises in store, will also be welcomed by early adopters.
Android users who do not own a Nexus device need to exercise some patience as they will have to wait for their manufacturer to roll out the upgrade.
