New photos from the set of the Wonder Woman film show that at least part of the movie will take place during World War I.
Rumors surfaced several months ago that the film would show flashbacks of the Amazonion princess during this time period, but these new photos confirm it.
The images show Gal Gadot as Diana and Chris Pine as Steve Trevor in World War I-specific garb as they film scenes for the movie. The images also capture props and signs associated with that particular time period, as well as extras in costume.
In DC Comics, Wonder Woman's origin story begins during World War II when she chooses to leave Paradise Island after a plane, carrying Steve, crashes there. She learns about the atrocities of the Nazis from the pilot and chooses to defy her mother and leave the island to help man fight the evil Hitler regime.
In the film, though, it seems that Diana met Steve much earlier on, but as to what caused her to leave her home is anyone's guess. World War I doesn't exactly have the black and white sort of evil associated with World War II, the kind of villainy that works well in providing motivation for an Amazonian to leave her family.
Of course, previous reports state that these scenes are flashbacks and that most of the film takes place in the modern day. Wonder Woman is more than her origin story, and to cover her history would take many films, so the focus on who she is today makes sense.
"I feel like I've been given a huge opportunity to inspire people, not only women," said Gadot to Entertainment Weekly. "And not because of me but because of who Wonder Woman is and what she stands for. There's a lot of responsibility. But I have the best team and the best people to work with. It's going to be an amazing ride, knock on wood."
Gadot also faced a lot of backlash when she was cast as the iconic superheroine in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, Gadot understands that this is all part of the process of taking on such a legendary role.
"People will always have something to say because that's the way people are," said Gadot. "And it's okay. But for me, it's my job. It's my career. It's my art. Whatever I do, I take it very seriously and I do my research and I give it my best. I just want to be able to shine and inspire people."
Wonder Woman debuts in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on March 25, 2016. The standalone Wonder Woman film premieres in 2017.
