Chris Hemsworth is now a far cry from Thor, the buff, blonde, Viking god of Thunder as seen in the “Avengers.” The Aussie star just posted a photo of his new look as the star of “In The Heart of The Sea," a film based on the real life events that inspired the novel “Moby Dick.”
Looking scraggly, thin, bearded, sunburned, and unkept, Hemsworth's physical transformation for the role reminds many of Tom Hank's look in his lost-at-sea flick “Cast Away.” Others are also comparing his dramatic weight loss for a movie role to the extremes that Christian Bale also went through when he prepared for his role in “The Machinist.”
Despite the sorry-looking state of his once godly figure, Hemsworth seems to be in good spirits about the lengths he went through to look the part and posted on Twitter that he was merely trying out a new diet called “Lost at Sea” -- which he does not recommend for anyone.
Following the posting of the photo, Hemsworth shared in a Twitter QnA that losing the weight was the hardest part about filming the period drama about the American whaling ship, the Essex, which was destroyed and stranded out in the open sea after being attacked by a sperm whale in 1820.
The crew of the Essex was stranded aboard their sinking ship for 90 days 3,700 kilometres off the coast of South America.
According to reports, Hemsworth, along with the other actors in the film, had to cut down their diets to only 500 calories a day but still workout in order to lose the weight quickly but safely. They also had to maintain a “sinewy strength” that suited the era.
“When you’re already starting off lean, its brutal to chew through that kind of weight. Every pound feels like a kilogram,” he shared.
The movie will be directed by Ron Howard, who was also behind "Apollo 13," "Arrested Development," and "A Beautiful Mind." It is set to be released in December.
