'Fantastic Four' reboot may not be based on comic storyline

Few details are known about Fox's planned "Fantastic Four" reboot, but we may now know the direction director Josh Trank plans on taking the franchise -- uncharted territory.

In a translated interview from the July issue of Esquire Mexico, actress Kate Mara, who will be playing the Invisible Woman, shared some details on how she is approaching bringing the iconic Sue Storm to life. When asked how she felt about being the new Invisible Woman after the character being previously portrayed by Jessica Alba, Mara says she doesn't feel more responsibility for this particular role than any other she's had over her career.

"I understand that there are many fans of Fantastic Four and I guess they expect a lot from me, but I prefer not to be pressured by that," Mara says in the interview. "We are also trying to create a new way of seeing these superheroes, I'm focusing on making her (Susan Storm) as real as possible."

Her next answer is even more revealing. When asked whether she was a fan of comics, the actress replied that she wasn't, and doesn't plan on reading them because director Trank says it isn't necessary for the film they are trying to make.

"I've never been a fan of comics, I've never actually read one," she says. "I was going to for this movie but the director said it wasn't necessary. Well, actually he told us that we shouldn't do it because the plot won't be based on any history of anything already published. So I chose to follow his instructions. The one fact is I am a fan of comic book movies, so it's very exciting to be part of a movie like this."

She goes on to describe her audition process for the film.

"I was excited, but I only focused on doing the best I could," she says. "I think there are roles you get if that's what needs to happen. I kept everything in perspective although expected to stay with the paper, because the movie has great actors like Michael B. Jordan (who will be the Human Torch).

The idea of not adapting the storyline from the "Fantastic Four" comics may be a warning sign to some fans, who have already been burned by two lackluster "Fantastic Four" films. The reboot already caught some criticism from book purists who balked at the idea of Jordan, who is African-American, playing the Human Torch.

In May fans learned that two iconic "Fantastic Four" villains would be appearing in the film, the nefarious Doctor Doom, to be played by Toby Kebbell, as well as Mole Man, to be played by Tim Blake Nelson.
