You may have to wait another week to play EA's Star Wars Battlefront, but you can at least play the free mobile companion app right now.
In addition to including Star Wars Battlefront news, the ability to tweak character loadouts and see what your friends are up to, the app includes a free tower defense style game called Star Wars Battlefront Base Command that will earn you credits in Star Wars Battlefront proper. These credits can be used towards unlocking new weapons and star cards in the full game. If you are planning on sinking dozens of hours into DICE's shooter when it's released, it never hurts to be able to unlock new items faster thanks to a few minutes spent on the app.
At the start of each game of Base Command you'll be dealt three unit cards and three star cards, which can be various vehicles and power-ups. Players must then fend off the invading Imperial forces in turn based battles. Each turn the Empire marches closer to the Rebel base, so players will need to use their star cards and units strategically if they want to emerge victorious.
Star Wars Battlefront Base Command is now available on the iOS and Android app stores. Star Wars Battlefront will be coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on Nov. 17. You can check out the game's new live-action trailer here. Still looking to pre-order the game? Be sure to read up on which retailers are offering the best extras for picking up on the game come next week.
