The live-action trailers for Star Wars Battlefront have definitely looked to capitalize on fans' nostalgia for the original trilogy, and this new advertisement is no different.
Rather than a grown man daydreaming about Star Wars while at work, this ad features people from all walks of life turning into piles of clothes. No, that's not right. They're vanishing? Teleporting into Star Wars Battlefront? Or is Star Wars Battlefront kidnapping them to fight on distant planets? I'm not really sure what's going on, but they are trying to copy Obi-Wan Kenobi from A New Hope. You know, the part where Obi-Wan says "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine." Then Darth Vader slashes him with his lightsaber, only for Obi-Wan's body to vanish, leaving his robes in a pile on the ground.
Nobody is striking down anybody in this trailer. Instead, people just disappear. It kind of seems dangerous. What happens if Star Wars Battlefront gobbles you up while you're driving? Or while you're performing heart surgery? This doesn't seem like a responsible thing for EA to do, to let their video game teleport people to the far-flung corners of the galaxy without warning. Who is going to pick up all those clothes?
Very clearly EA is trying to make this a serious, heartstring-tugging trailer, but it kind of comes off a little goofy. But hey, Anna Kendrick is in it for about 10 seconds. That's cool, I guess.
Star Wars Battlefront releases on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on Nov. 17. If you're playing on Xbox One and have a subscription to EA Access, you'll be able to play the game for up to 10 hours starting on Nov. 12.
