It's not unusual that Sir Tom Jones has had enough of questions about his ancestry after 52 years in the entertainment industry. His mother doesn't know the answer and neither does he but, in an interview on Oct. 31, he finally declared that he wanted to find out for sure if he does have a black ancestor through a DNA test.
The 75-year-old singer knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2006 said that people seem to think he is just passing as white because of his incredible baritone voice and curly hair, however, he insists he is not just hiding black ancestry. After all, how could he hide an ancestry if he himself has no knowledge of it?
"When I was born... They asked if she had any black blood and she said she didn't know," Sir Jones said of his mother.
He recalled that when he first came to America, people who heard his songs on the radio were surprised that he isn't black. It seems it won't be long until the Welsh veteran singer finds out for sure if the speculations are correct and to finally settle the question that he's been asked since he began his career in music. "I'm going to get my DNA tested. I want to find out," he said.
Likewise, his hip-swaying attracted the crowd more than necessary and he often found knickers being thrown at him when he sings and that admitted that he feels objectified by it.
"I know what it's like to feel objectified. For a long time, my image overpowered my talent. The whole sex thing. You become this caricature of yourself," Sir Tom Jones said.
Sir Tom Jones released his first and only autobiography titled "Over the Top and Back" on Oct. 8 with a companion soundtrack "Long Lost Suitcase" from Virgin EMI.
