Fandango has posted what its calling an "extended look" (even though it's really just a standard-length movie trailer) at Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy." The trailer includes plenty of footage you've seen before, and just as much that you have not.
The big winners on this one are the tree-like Groot and villain Ronan, both of whom get more screen time than we've seen yet. Rocket Raccoon also gets quite the showcase, and you get a much better feel for how Bradley Cooper's voice work on the character comes across; it's obviously been processed and altered. The trailer also contains the very first blink-and-you'll-miss-it glimpse of "The Walking Dead" star Michael Rooker as a blue-skinned character named Yondu.
Among other things, you'll see what the dynamic of this quote-unquote "team" is really like. Given that this is five misfits and criminals, their path to becoming a superhero team out to save the world will be a bumpy one. Case in point is the argument between Peter Quill and Rocket about the former supposedly having a plan. The scene also serves to showcase Groot's quirky nature, as well as the fact that even though all he's capable of saying is "I am Groot," Rocket seems to understand what he's really trying to say.
Ronan gets several close-ups along with his first on-screen dialogue. It's not entirely clear what Ronan wants yet, though one assumes that he's the cause of the "destroy the galaxy" plot. Ronan's underling Nebula can also be seen, along with looks at plenty of background players. Michael Rooker's Yondu character is said to be "one of the original Guardians of the Galaxy." Take that as you will.
"Guardians" was always going to be a tougher sell than any movie Marvel's released to date for two reasons. First, it's a team the general public has never heard of. Second, these aren't your typical Marvel superheroes; they're outcasts and losers who rise to the occasion. Marvel has spent untold amounts of cash on clever marketing that introduces the team to the public prior to the film's release, and now that it's less than a month from hitting big screens everywhere, the company's PR machine is going full blast.
In addition to the new trailer, Marvel.com has posted 25 new images from the film that include several character close-ups, looks at locations that haven't been seen before and behind-the-scenes pictures of the cast with director James Gunn.
Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" opens August 1, 2014. It stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill aka Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana as alien assassin Gamora; Dave Bautista as super-strong muscle man Drax the Destroyer; the voice of Bradley Cooper as the genetically-engineered Rocket Raccoon; the voice of Vin Diesel as walking, talking tree Groot; and Lee Pace as the wicked Ronan the Accuser. A host of other well-known actors make appearances in the film as well, including Glenn Close, John C. Reilly, Djimon Hounsou, Benicio del Toro and former "Doctor Who" companion Karen Gillan.
