Fake footage from ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ set is almost as good as the real thing

Fans have been clamoring for anything resembling official “Star Wars: Episode VII” news over the past few months, but the end result has been more fake scoops and rumors than authentic reports. While that’s a bad thing on most days, there has been some fan material out there that has been as good as, or better than, the real thing.

That’s the case with Frank Wunderlich, who claims he caught video of “Episode VII” filming in Germany recently. From the start this was obviously a fake fan video, especially since the movie isn’t even filming in Germany. But that didn’t stop the end result from being one of the most inventive "Star Wars" fan videos ever released.

In the video, Wunderlich uses impressive special-effects techniques to blend classic Imperial vehicles—including Tie-Fighters, AT-AT walkers and Star Destroyers—with a real world airport in Frankfurt. Despite obviously being fan-created, Wunderlich tried to pass this video off as a real set visit with this video description:

"Looks like the Story of Star Wars plays on Earth too in the next Episode. I took these pictures on my Flight back from the States to Germany at the Frankfurt Airport. Seems like the biggest german airport plays a key role as an imperial starport in the new episode -- there have just been imperial forces at the scene.
Maybe the Rebelboys hide in Berlin... :-D
"

Fans are too savvy to fall for that, but they also appreciate a great special-effects show as well. That’s why this video has blown up on the Internet over the past 24 hours.

While the idea of a "Star Wars" movie ever featuring Earth sounds downright terrible, seeing these classic ships and vehicles interact with our world is impressive, especially when you notice the scale of a mammoth AT-AT walker compared to a normal-sized bus.

It may still be a while before any official footage from “Episode VII” is released, but as long as the fanbase continues its ravenous ways, there will always be something new to watch from that galaxy far, far away. Take a look at the video below:
