Meizu is gunning for the OnePlus 2 with its latest campaign, offering some users the chance to swap their OnePlus flagship for a new Meizu PRO 5.
Not too long ago, OnePlus started a campaign to promote its flagship and encourage Samsung smartphone owners to #TakeTheEdgeOff and trade their Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+ or Galaxy Note 5 for the OnePlus 2.
With that #TakeTheEdgeOff campaign, OnePlus allowed 50 owners of the aforementioned Samsung Galaxy smartphones to donate their phone to charity and get a OnePlus 2 instead.
Another Chinese device maker called Meizu is now giving OnePlus a taste of its own medicine with a new #TurnTheHeatOff campaign, targeting OnePlus 2 owners. The company doesn't mention how many "winners" it will select, but those who want to participate for a chance to swap their OnePlus 2 for the Meizu PRO 5 have to tell the company why they want to #TurnTheHeatOff.
The hashtag is clearly a jab at the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 powering the OnePlus 2, as the processor has been highly criticized for its overheating issues.
For those unfamiliar with the Meizu PRO 5, the smartphone features a 5.7-inch full HD (1080p) display and packs an Exynos 7420 processor, offering two configurations for storage and RAM. The 32 GB variant comes with 3 GB of RAM, while the 64 GB model has a hefty 4 GB of RAM. Both models support microSD for additional storage.
The Meizu PRO 5 further features a 21-megapixel rear camera with laser autofocus, a fingerprint sensor, a USB Type-C port and Android 5.1 with Flyme 5.0 OS on the software side.
It seems that Meizu is having a blast with this new campaign, judging by the comments on its Facebook post. In its replies, the company also uses #TurnNFCOn and #TurnFastChargingOn hashtags, mocking the OnePlus 2 for not having NFC or fast-charging capabilities.
It remains to be seen whether Meizu will manage to convince OnePlus 2 owners to swap their smartphone for a Meizu PRO 5, but this campaign nonetheless draws attention to its little-known flagship. If many didn't know about the Meizu PRO 5 before, this new move to give OnePlus a taste of its own medicine definitely drew plenty of media attention.
Lastly, it's worth pointing out that this campaign targets only OnePlus 2 owners, as the OnePlus One is not eligible for the swap.
