In the 1989 classic film Back to the Future Part II, Oct. 21, 2015, was the date that Marty McFly was supposed to wind up in the future.
With that day being Wednesday, a group of students at Queen's University Belfast in Ireland plan on celebrating the occasion by unleashing an all-electric DeLorean that they built. After all, the DeLorean was a staple of the Back to the Future franchise of movies, so it's only right.
The students from QUB's School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science departments pooled together to work on the electric vehicle, which will be shown throughout Ireland in a concerted effort to get students interested in STEM careers. In fact, QUB set aside students to teach their peers how the DeLorean was being converted into an electric car and, overall, to understand the importance of renewable electric power for transport.
After finding the DeLorean in poor condition last year, the students added an electric drivetrain and restored the body. They installed a 27 kWh battery and 270-horsepower electric motor, while maintaining the DeLorean's manual transmission.
"I really enjoyed working on this project," Kenny McAneaney, an engineering student with the program, says in the clip. "I'm never going to get a chance again to work on such an iconic car."
Now that these students saluted Back to the Future Part II with this DeLorean restoration, let's see if the Chicago Cubs can pay tribute to the film as well. The movie had predicted the Cubs to win the World Series in 2015.
