Like a leaf on the wind, Firefly and Star Wars: Rogue One actor Alan Tudyk recently spoke about why he gave up a role in upcoming video game Uncharted 4: A Thief's End.
In an interview with IGN about the release of his Web series, Con Man, which also stars Tudyk's Firefly co-star Nathan Fillion, Tudyk opened up about being originally cast to do some voice work in the original version of Uncharted 4. However, that didn't pan out, at least according to Tudyk, who didn't make it clear if he left the project or if the studio fired him. However, Tudyk did refer to some odd script changes being behind the decision.
"I liked it ... they ... ummm ... they fired ... ummm ... [lets out a massive sigh] I left, I quit! [laughs]," said Tudyk. "So, I didn't like it. I mean, I left because they decided to go a different way with it and so when they did that, when they changed leadership, it made my contract null and void and I was able to take that opportunity to walk away which was great because I got the experience of doing it, I made some friends — not with Naughty Dog — but I made some friends with the people that left."
Uncharted 4 started out as a project under the leadership of Amy Hennig at Naughty Dog. However, Hennig left the company in March, 2014, although reports stated that others within the company forced her out. Hennig led the previous three Uncharted games for the development studio.
That departure left the latest title in the Uncharted franchise up in the air. It also resulted in Naughty Dog taking eight months of work on Uncharted 4 and scrapping all of it. The team behind The Last of Us ended up taking over the project, and that meant starting from scratch. This is also why the game faced several delays in its release date, which was originally scheduled for this year (the release date is now set for 2016).
It's probably these script changes and the change of leadership that Tudyk referred to as the reasons why he left: it's likely that once the team behind The Last of Us re-wrote the story, the role Tudyk originally signed up for wasn't there or wasn't the same.
Tudyk wasn't the only actor originally signed on for Uncharted 4 to walk away.
"Todd Stashwick was in that as well who is in Con Man and he did the same thing I did which was 'yeah we're gonna leave now," said Tudyk. "Y'all are making some weird changes, we're gonna leave'. Sorry Nolan [North], we left you, we just walked away, we abandoned him."
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End releases on March 18, 2016.
