If you want to grab a cold one, now you can do so like a grizzled veteran that hunts great white sharks!
Narragansett Beer, the beer drunk by the shark hunters in Steven Spielberg's classic film "Jaws," has released its beer in the same cans as those from the film, back in 1975. The company says that for the whole summer, 12, 18, and 30 packs of 12-ounce cans of the Narragansett Lager will feature the vintage can design from '75.
In the famous thriller, Captain Sam Quint (Robert Shaw) drinks a can of Narragansett Beer then crushes it, while he and his fellow shark hunters are out sailing and chumming for the man-eating shark. He is discussing current sailing and fishing conditions, with police chief Martin Brody (Roy Schneider) and marine biologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss). Hooper responds to Quint's macho beer crushing by squeezing his soft Styrofoam cup.
This move by Narragansett Beer is more than just for looks. The company has partnered with the R.J. Dunlap Marine Conservation Program at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science by sponsoring the adoption of a shark. The company has purchased a satellite tag that will allow researchers and the public to track the shark. The company has also purchased a tracking buoy off the coast of Cape Cod through the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy.
Narragansett Beer is asking fans to submit names for its adopted shark via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #NameTheShark. The promotion to name the shark will run from now until Shark Week, which begins on August 10.
Narragansett Beer is the 45th largest brewing company in America and the fastest growing in the Northeast, according to the company. The company also notes that its lager was winner of the Bronze Medal at the 2008 World Beer Cup and the winner of First Place at the Great International Beer Festival in 2010.
According to the company, Narragansett Beer is the oldest beer in New England, founded in 1890. The company currently resides in Providence, Rhode Island.
"Jaws" celebrated its 39th anniversary on June 20.
