The name may be cool to some, but many have a problem with its concept. Developers Overkill and Starbreeze Studios just opened up Payday 2's Blackmarket for PC and it's literally littered with microtransactions.
To celebrate this year's edition of Payday 2's Crimefest, the developers are dropping safes, at random, into the heist video game. What's annoying fans is the safes contain weapons perks, such as skins and buffs, that require real-world cash to access.
It costs $2.50 to access the contents of the safes. And as a premium game, one in which everything is expected to be offered at a flat free up front, microtransations have been bringing out the worst in players of the robbery-themed co-op shooter.
The safe drops were introduced into the game via its recently released Blackmarket Update.
"Rise like a Sputnik! Vlad's brand new Weapons Deal lets you bring out the very best in your favorite guns with a huge update to the Black Market," states Overkill. "This Weapons Deal opens up a brand new way of allowing you to personalize your weapons with skins, mods and more!"
Last month, David Goldfarb, Payday 2's lead designer, offered the following when asked if the studio had any intentions of introducing microtransactions into the game:
"No. No. God, I hope not. Never. No," said Goldfarb.
Back in 2013, before the game launched, a Payday 2 producer re-asserting the studio's stance on microtransactions.
"We've made it clear that PAYDAY 2 will have no micro-transactions whatsoever (shame on you if you thought otherwise!) and we've made it more clear that the PAYDAY loot bag is part of the Career Criminal Edition as well," the producer stated.
Well, something has changed in the minds of the game masters and now microtransactions are a part of Payday 2. So now there's a massive Reddit thread, tilted F--- You Overkill, that has been home for the hate being lobbed at the studio over the monetizing of a game that promises everything up front for a one-time fee.
