It truly is the season of the witch — at least in regard to the supernatural Vin Diesel vehicle The Last Witch Hunter. With almost a week to go before the action adventure film's Oct. 23 premiere, Universal Studio's latest trailer features a beat-heavy, passionate and (aptly) haunting version of the classic 1966 Rolling Stones song "Paint it Black," covered by pop star Ciara.
Ciara noted that she was unfamiliar with the Rolling Stones single when Universal first offered her a chance to record the track exclusively for The Last Witch Hunter soundtrack, set to be released on Nov. 13. Despite this, the pop star quickly became enthralled by the song's eastern musical instrumentation and dark-but-ethereal feel, which fits the mood of the trailer — and movie — it's for.
"[The song] was actually a sound I've always wanted to play with, and it just didn't get any better than being able to cover a Rolling Stones song," she recently said in an interview with Rolling Stone. "I feel like it pushes the edge and the limit for me, in reference to what people probably expect from me ... and then creatively I just got to really have some fun that I don't usually do in my music."
Directed by Breck Eiser, The Last Witch Hunter stars Diesel as the immortal titular witch hunter, as well as Rose Leslie, Isaach De Bankolé, Elijah Wood and Michael Caine.
Here's an official synopsis of the witchy vigilante flick:
"The modern world holds many secrets, but the most astounding secret of all is that witches still live amongst us; vicious supernatural creatures intent on unleashing the Black Death upon the world. Armies of witch hunters battled the unnatural enemy across the globe for centuries, including KAULDER, a valiant warrior who managed to slay the all-powerful QUEEN WITCH, decimating her followers in the process. In the moments right before her death, the QUEEN curses KAULDER with her own immortality, forever separating him from his beloved wife and daughter in the afterlife. Today KAULDER is the only one of his kind remaining, and has spent centuries hunting down rogue witches, all the while yearning for his long-lost loved ones. However, unbeknownst to KAULDER, the QUEEN WITCH is resurrected and seeks revenge on her killer causing an epic battle that will determine the survival of the human race."
