AT&T is preparing new technology that will allow multiple devices, such as a phone and tablet, to share the same phone number.
The technology is called NumberSync, and it will certainly be attractive for users who have multiple devices with their own wireless connections.
"This is really a first in the industry that we are giving customers the ability to do this," said AT&T Mobility CEO Glenn Lurie in an interview with Re/Code.
AT&T says that it expects to be able to launch the technology to the public soon, however, it has not given a specific release date. Many smartphones that currently exist will be able to make use of the new feature through a simple software update, and in the case of other devices, AT&T hopes to work with manufacturers as they release new devices.
While there won't be a separate charge to share a single number, AT&T does charge a connection fee for each device that makes use of a shared data plan.
Because of the fact that NumberSync is based around the network, it should continue to work even if the primary phone of the user is switched off. Not only that, but devices don't need to be near each other in order for the feature to work properly. This is different from technology like Apple's Continuity, which allows users to take phone calls from their Mac, but only if the iPhone and Mac are on the same wireless network.
The feature will be especially useful as wearable devices with network connections become the norm. It could also show up in connected cars, with connecting a smartphone to Bluetooth remaining a little complicated and tedious.
It's unclear if other carriers are experimenting with similar technologies, however, it's likely that they are and will release it shortly after AT&T first releases NumberSync.
