Verizon and AT&T are rolling out a major over-the-air update for the LG G4. The update, which is expected to roll out in phases over the next few days, aims to address security issues and provide improvements to a number of features.
The update takes up a sizeable 400+ MB of storage space and bumps up the firmware version to VS98612A for the Verizon G4 and H810 for the AT&T device.
Verizon has yet to reveal the changelog for the update, but Big Red says the update includes Android security patches to fix undisclosed security holes. The Verizon LG G4 never received the fix for the Stagefright bug, so it is possible that this major new update addresses that.
Other than that, Verizon provides no details about what the update includes, but AT&T has shared more information. On its support page for the G4, AT&T says the update includes a number of enhancements to the calendar, battery life and keyboard. It also includes improvements to the G4's GPS, Exchange Active Sync and LG Backup. The camera software was also tweaked, as well as the touchscreen, which sometimes failed to respond to the user's touch. The AT&T update also includes the same security enhancements rolled out by Verizon.
Both carriers recommend that users install the software update over Wi-Fi to prevent incurring massive data charges. Users should also make sure their phone has enough battery life to avoid it turning off in the middle of the installation.
The Verizon G4 will push a software update message that says:
"This software update includes enhancements and improvements including Android security update to your LG G4. This update will restart your device. It is a good idea to charge your phone during the update if you can."
Meanwhile, AT&T's notification message says:
"A new software update from AT&T is available for your device. This software update will take several minutes and will not delete any personal data on your device. All your phone services (including emergency calls) will be suspended during the install."
For the impatient, they can go over to Settings > About phone > Software updates to check out if the update has reached their phone.
