When it comes to modern filmmaking icons, it's hard to do better than the Coen Brothers. Sure, their films may always be a bit off-kilter, but that's what makes them unique: in an age where everything is either a comic book movie or a remake of some kind, finding something that's truly different can be a Herculean task. And, with films like Fargo, No Country for Old Men and The Big Lebowski under their belts, the Coen Brothers are proof that movies don't have to be carbon copies of one another.
Sadly, it's been quite a while since anyone has seen anything from the Coen Brothers: Inside Llewyn Davis was the last film to be written and directed by the brothers, and that was released way back in 2013. Thankfully, Hail, Caesar!, a film about filmmaking, is scheduled to hit theaters next year — and the first trailer just made its way online.
Considering how long the movie has been in development, it's actually kind of surprising that fans haven't gotten to see more of it — most studios these days try shoving something onto social media every couple of days. The Coen Brothers, on the other hand, announced Hail, Caesar! in late 2014, and fans haven't gotten to see anything until now. While that would usually mean trouble, the trailer proves that Hail, Caesar! is far from floundering.
For the most part, the Coen Brothers have kept their settings contemporary, so it'll be interesting to see what they can do with a setting like 1950s Hollywood — especially from the perspectives of modern filmmakers. Plus, if the trailer is anything to go by, this could be some of the duo's best writing yet.
What's even better is that the long wait for the Coen Brothers' return to theaters is almost over: Hail, Caesar! is due out on February 5, 2016.
