Twi-hards will now have something to look forward to for the 10th anniversary celebration of Twilight.
The vampire romance novel received a new twist as author Stephenie Meyer revamped the plot with gender-swapped characters. The 442-page novel, entitled Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined, was released Oct. 6.
The hit novel series sold over 150 million books and was adapted into an even more successful movie series starring Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen, Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan and Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black.
In the newest book, the original characters Edward and Bella are now Edythe and Beaufort, respectively, while Jacob is recast as Julie.
"I wanted to do something fun for the 10th anniversary and the publisher wanted like a foreword and I thought, 'Well, maybe something more interesting,'" said Meyer in an interview.
Team Edward and Team Jacob fans may have a lot of reimagining, and perhaps reconsidering, to do for this one.
Or not.
"It really is the same story. It's just a love story. It doesn't matter who's the boy and who's the girl. It still works out," Meyer explained.
The plot begins the same way as the original. However, in the course of the book, several points of difference are bound to arise due to the characters' personalities. Nonetheless, the essence of the story remains. Readers continue to find what made the books and the movies a huge hit.
Twi-hards did not fail to deliver in terms of the usual obsessive fandom. The fans took to Twitter to express their excitement over the new book.
"i haven't mentioned the new Twilight book because 13 year old me is embarrassingly excited to read it and I gotta keep up my act of being cool," posted one fan.
"Gender bent Twilight. I repeat, gender bent Twilight. Did NOT see that coming but whoa I can't wait to read it! #Twilight10 #LifeandDeath," another fan said.
The motivation behind the new book was the questions that she received about Bella's damsel-in-distress situation.
"It's always bothered me a little bit, because anyone surrounded by superheroes is going to be in distress. I thought, 'What if we switched it around a bit and see how a boy does,' and, you know, it's about the same," the 41-year-old author shared.
On the contrary, Meyer explained that she doesn't really see a spinoff series featuring Edythe and Beau.
