CBS Working On ‘Nancy Drew’ TV Series

Nancy Drew will be soon making her way back into the small screen as CBS is developing a TV series based on the famous teen sleuth.

Except she'll no longer be a teen in the upcoming series as CBS' contemporary take will see Drew as a 30-year-old NYPD detective. She may have grown up but she's still investigating and solving crimes with the help of her uncanny skills of observation. Grey's Anatomy executive producers Tony Phelan and Joan Rater are on board as co-writers for the adaptation, working alongside Dan Jinks as producer.

Drew first appeared in 1930 in the Nancy Drew books written by various authors under the pseudonym Carolyn Keene. She has seen many changes over the years but Drew had an incredible following so much so that the books were published until 2003 and spawned three television shows and five feature films.

The first Nancy Drew series to air was from ABC in the 1970s and was not solely about teen sleuth. Instead, she joined the Hardy Boys, Frank and Joe, in The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries which starred Pamela Sue Martin as Drew.

A TV movie also aired in 2002 starring Maggie Lawson. It was originally meant to be a series but plans did not pan out.

As for Nancy Drew on the big screen, four were released in the late 1930s, directed by William Clemens and starring Bonita Granville. The most recent film adaptation starred Emma Roberts and came out in 2007. All five movies were by Warner Bros.

Nancy Drew is the latest to enter the list of reboots broadcast networks are exploring to capture their audience. In CBS, it will join The Island of Dr. Moreau, Training Day and MacGyver. The network is also working on reviving Rush Hour as a TV series and has found early success thanks to a Limitless follow-up.

As she is seen as a feminist icon, Drew has cultural impact that influenced a number of girls back in the day, including those that have grown up to be influential in their own right like Barbra Streisand, Oprah Winfrey, Hillary Clinton and Sandra Day O'Connor.

There is no word yet on who CBS is interested in to star in Nancy Drew.
