Porsche will be using Apple CarPlay in its new 911 cars instead of the Android Auto infotainment option.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto allows users to connect to a car's compatible infotainment system via the user's smartphone.
"CarPlay is a smarter way to use your iPhone in the car," per Apple. CarPlay takes the things you want to do with your iPhone while driving and puts them right on the car's built-in display. You can get directions, make calls, send and receive messages, and listen to music all in a way that allows you to stay focused on the road."
CarPlay also features Siri voice control, which is specially designed for driving scenarios.
Porsche had the option to select CarPlay or Android Auto and the German carmaker opted for the Apple offering. Porsche has not revealed a reason to go for Apple CarPlay in its new 911 cars.
Some experts believe that Android Auto agreement with Porsche required the carmaker to release too much information about a car such as throttle position, vehicle speed and more. This requirement from the Internet giant may have affected Porsche's decision to select CarPlay over Android Auto in its upcoming 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera S.
"Basically Google wants a complete OBD2 dump whenever someone activates Android Auto," per Motor Trend.
Porsche believes that data asked by Google is quite sensitive as this information makes Porsche cars special.
On the other hand, Apple does not need access to vital data of the car and the company just wants carmakers to let CarPlay know when the vehicle is in motion.
It remains unclear why Google wants access to important information about the car when they are not necessary for Android Auto. Google is also developing its own car. Some market observers believe that the Internet giant may want to collect sensitive data from established carmakers and use them in its upcoming cars.
