Report: Taiki Waititi May Direct 'Thor 3: Ragnarok'

With Marvel's various film projects continuing to break box office records, it's no surprise that the company would start scheduling films before they have a full crew. The story leading up to Avengers: Infinity War is absolutely immense, not to mention expensive to produce — Marvel is just making sure that it can keep its multi-million dollar projects on track.

Case in point: Thor: Ragnarok. Considering that the film isn't scheduled to hit theaters until 2017, it's not exactly surprising that it doesn't have everything nailed down quite yet. Even so, it's a little strange that the movie is heading into pre-production without a director nailed down — especially with the Thor films' shaky history with its showrunners.

However, according to a new report (via The Wrap), Marvel may have found a director for Thor: Ragnarok: Taika Waititi, best known for his work on the 2014 film What We Do In the Shadows, is reportedly in talks to direct the third Thor film. Nothing has been confirmed quite yet ... but with Marvel's hiring history, it's not all that strange a move, either.

As it stands, hiring outside of the box has worked out well for Marvel. Not only did the James Gunn-directed Guardians of the Galaxy perform better than anyone expected, but Joe and Anthony Russo went from directing Captain America: The Winter Soldier to running both the Captain America movies and Avengers: Infinity War. Waititi may not be the first name that comes to mind, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Plus, if What We Do In the Shadows is anything to go by, Waititi already has a firm grasp on the supernatural and his own sense of humor. Thor: The Dark World was a dry, dull movie — hopefully, Waititi can inject some life back into the series.

Again, nothing is set in stone until Marvel issues a statement — but, all things considered, it looks like Thor: Ragnarok may finally have its director.

Thor: Ragnarok is scheduled to hit theaters on July 28, 2017.
