'Master Chief is dead, long live Master Chief!' is something a lot of Halo fans will cry out during the vapid shooting matches of Halo 5: Guardians. The game is announced for Oct. 27, leaving one more month for 343 Industries to polish the final details. A new trailer of the game has been released, and it shows a bleak vision of the year 2560.
The cinematic presents a gloomy atmosphere of fear, political quarrel, destruction and sorrow, pinnacled by a crumbling city that traps Master Chief under its ruins. The hero's visor shifts from orange to "dimmed," as the rubble and debris come crashing down on top of him. Later on, civilians and ex-soldiers watch a dreadful live transmission where ONI and the UNSC announce the confirmed KIA of Spartan 117.
Frank O'Connor, executive producer of the game, already stated that the story of Spartan John-117 is ending with the fifth installment of the Halo series. A ray of hope comes from the fact that Microsoft announced the ending of Chief's tale back in Halo 3 as well, so maybe Halo 5: Guardians will surprise its fans and somehow keep Master Chief in play.
Even if the single player campaign will follow the lines of the trailer, gamers will pick up Chief's green armor, assault rifle and futuristic energy swords in the multiplayer modes, where piles of fun are guaranteed. The Warzone multiplayer in Halo 5: Guardians is a 12 against 12 base-capturing, laser blazing firefight that happens on maps four times larger than the ones in Halo 4. Teams do not just counter each other, but are also challenged by AI enemies from the single player campaign. For players that are more vehicle-inclined, 343 Industries prepared buggies, Titanfall-resembling mechs and even warplanes.
After testing out early versions of Halo 5: Guardians, it is clear that the game will be full of reverences to the series' fans. After 14 years of gaming under the Halo banner, Halo 5: Guardians has a chance to round up the series in a memorable and solemn way, just like Master Chief would've wanted it.
Good game, Spartan John-117! Good game!
