Gamers will now be able to play the latest gaming titles, such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain, on new notebooks without having to sacrifice full HD displays.
Nvidia announced its new gaming card, the GeForce GTX 980 graphics processor unit, which will provide high-quality desktop graphics on gaming laptops.
Nvidia's new GPU runs at a base of 1.1 GHz and is packed with powerful 2,048 CUDA cores, which is the exact same as the desktop chip. Now, gamers won't have to sacrifice graphic quality when gaming on-the-go.
The GTX 980 will bring 7 Gbps of memory bandwidth, an improvement from the 5 Gbps in the 980M, and four to eight phase power supplies as well as G-SYNC technology.
Consumers won't have to worry about having their laptops overheat, because each laptop that features the GTX 980 will have a custom fan to keep the new cards cool. This means the laptops equipped with the GPU will be able to run games at over 60 fps.
There are six systems that will feature GeForce GTX 980, including the Aorus X7 DT, Clevo P870DM and P775DM, MSI GT72 and GT80 and the Asus GX700VO.
Along with the horsepower to provide desktop-quality graphics, Nvidia also revealed the new notebooks with the GeForce GTX 980 card will be the first portable computers to support Oculus Rift. In order to use the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, the gamer will need a desktop graphic card, meaning that they will now be able to use the VR headset outside of their desktop computers.
There is no exact release date or prices available for the first wave of laptops that will support the GeForce GTX 980 card, but Nvidia revealed they will start to hit the market later this fall.
