If you own the original three Star Wars films on DVD or Blu-ray, you're stuck with the Special Editions that George Lucas tinkered with over the years, changing several key scenes, including the much-reviled Hayden Christensen Force Ghost from Return of the Jedi.
However, with new Stars Wars movies on the way, rumors surfaced that the original theatrical cuts of the films would soon make it to Blu-ray, and those rumors could prove true, at least according to director John Landis.
Landis recently attended Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Orlando to talk about a new maze based on his classic horror film, An American Werewolf in London. During that discussion, though, Landis spoke about Star Wars and informed fans that the rumors about a theatrical cut on Blu-ray is probably true.
"George owns his movies, so he can do what he wants ... ," Landis said. "My personal opinion is George hurt his movies by doing what he did."
Landis acknowledged that the films did belong to Lucas and that it was fair that he tinkered with them, but then went on to state something about the potential Blu-ray release of the original versions of the films.
"Did you know Disney, by the way, is putting out the original Star Wars the way it was?" Landis asked. "So, Disney, they're like, money on the floor."
So it's hardly a confirmation that Disney will definitely put out a Blu-ray theatrical version of the films, especially with the home distribution rights to the original three films being owned by 20th Century Fox until 2020. However, it's obviously something Star Wars fans want, especially the male fans who don't like the changes made by Lucas in later versions of the movies.
Meanwhile, Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens releases worldwide on Dec. 18.
