When it comes to professional wrestling, most people think of gigantic, shirtless men beating the tar out of each other. While that does define most of what the modern WWE is all about, it's not the whole story: the WWE's all-female division, the divas, have come a long way in the past few months.
What used to be a division all about short, boring matches has become some of the company's biggest draws. Sure, it's not necessarily the most traditional form of feminism, but it's nice to see the women wrestlers finally getting their shot at the spotlight.
Because of this huge push, the divas division is more popular than ever. In fact, many fans were hoping that the divas division would be taking a more prominent spot in 2K Games' WWE titles ... unfortunately, it doesn't look like that'll be happening just yet.
As part of a press release published earlier today, 2K Games confirmed that several fan-favorite divas would not be included in WWE 2K16. That's not to say that the title won't feature any female wrestlers ... it just won't have several of the wrestlers who have helped change the divas division throughout the past year.
"We pushed as hard as we could to include Sasha Banks, Charlotte, Becky Lynch, and Bayley in WWE 2K16, but it simply did not work out for various reasons. While we are not divulging full details on WWE 2K16's post-launch plans just yet, we can confirm that the Four Horsewomen will not be available as DLC," says 2K Games in its press release.
To be fair, there are plenty of technical reasons why the newer divas might not have made it into the core game. Between 2K Games' new facial scanning technology and the ridiculous amounts of motion capture required to insert a wrestler into the game, the game's final roster has to be locked down months in advance. While it's true that the divas division is far more popular than it ever has been, that change only happened over the past few months: Basically, if the divas weren't already popular when 2K locked everything down, they wouldn't have made it into the game regardless.
What's strange is that 2K also stated that the idea of the divas joining WWE 2K16 isn't even on the table. For years, every WWE game has added in new wrestlers with DLC — why aren't the divas even in the running? Sadly, the press release doesn't even give a reason for their exclusion — at this point, it's really anyone's guess.
With any luck, 2K Games will change their minds and try to fit the Four Horsewomen into WWE 2K16's post-launch DLC plans ... otherwise, it looks like diva fans will just have to wait until next year's game.
WWE 2K16 is set for launch on Oct. 27.
