Back in July, Marvel Comics announced that Sam Wilson was taking the reigns from Steve Rogers as the new Captain America.
Now, Marvel just released cover art and other images from the first issue of Sam Wilson, Captain America #1.
So, how does Wilson become the new Cap'n? It seems that Rogers' super serum finally wears off, physically reverting him to a 90-year-old man. However, the world still needs Captain America, so Marvel handed over the reigns to Sam Wilson.
Wilson began his career as Falcon, one of the first African-American superheroes in comics. Now, he's one of the most well-known African-American superheroes in comics as Captain America.
"We have more of a global audience than ever," said Tom Brevoort, Marvel executive editor, to The New York Daily News. "And that just makes us more aware that we have more readers of different backgrounds who are hungry for characters who come from circumstances like their own. Our creators take that seriously."
Here's a preview of Sam Wilson, Captain America #1, with writing by Nick Spencer and art by Daniel Acuna.
The first issue of Sam Wilson, Captain America begins with Wilson accepting the title of Captain America from Rogers, one of his closest friends. However, Marvel teases that not all is well between the two men.
"Now, as the Marvel Universe charges forward into a new age, the Avenger formerly known as the Falcon stands proud as the one and only Captain America!" writes Marvel in a press statement. "Yet eight months have passed, and these two former friends now find themselves on opposite sides. What could have happened to divide them?"
Marvel also promises that Wilson will have "new friends, new foes and a new beginning."
Sam Wilson, Captain America #1 hits stores and online in October.
