Facebook Working On Dislike Button: It's Not What Many Expect Though

Facebook announced that it will soon launch the much requested "Dislike" button.

In a Q& A session, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the social media site is currently working on adding the "Dislike" button but emphasized heavily on how and when the users should click it.

Anyone who has been using Facebook for quite some time now believe that getting a "Like" from a Facebook friend on one of his posts doesn't just literally mean that the post is liked. It also means that the friend wants him to feel his presence in Facebook, that he is still a good friend and that it's also another way of saying "Hello, how have you been."

There are also those who just seem to run out of words to say and believe that clicking "Like" is enough to express all his thoughts.

However, the situation is definitely not the same when the user would post a life update that is geared more on the undesirable side of things or those that don't exude a happy mood. This can include situations such as a death in the family, a gruesome accident, a heartbreak, or losing a job.

"Not every moment is a good moment," said Zuckerberg. "If you share something that's sad like a refugee crisis that touches you or a family member passes away, it may not be comfortable to like that post...I do think it's important to give people more options than liking it."

In the past, Facebook has been trying to evade the possibility of building a "Dislike" button over worries that users would only seem like they are voting up or down on posts like a casual affair.

"That doesn't seem like the kind of community we want to create," added Zuckerberg.

According to Zuckerberg, users want Facebook to have a way for them to express "empathy." Their request on having a "Dislike" button on the site does not really mean that they want to be able to downvote the posts of other FB users.

"I think people have asked about the dislike button for many years," said Zuckerberg. "Today is a special day because today is the day I can say we're working on it and shipping it."
